Privacy Notice

CheckNews (“CheckNews”) is responsible for the processing of the personal data it collects through checknews.org, in accordance with the laws of México on the protection of personal data held by private parties. This notice explains what data we process, why, and how you can exercise your rights.
What data we process
If you use CheckNews without an account, we do not ask you for any personal data. Your saved stories, watchlist topics, views and preferences stay in your browser and never reach our servers. To protect the service, our servers process the IP address of each request; in complaint logs we store it only as an encrypted code that cannot identify you, as we do in the API logs.
Audience measurement. To know how many people use CheckNews we count visits without cookies: for each page viewed we record the section, the referring site, the approximate country, the language, the device type, the browser and the reading time. To count unique visitors we use a code computed from your IP address and browser together with a key that changes every day, so we cannot recognize you from one day to the next and we do not store your IP address. The data is used only in aggregate form (totals and percentages) and the details of each visit are deleted after 90 days.
If you create an account, we process:
- Your name and email address.
- Your password, stored only as an encrypted code (bcrypt) that cannot be recovered.
- The stories you save, the topics you follow, your views and your dashboard layout.
- The date you signed up, your last access and, for each open session, the IP address and browser you signed in from.
If you send a complaint or a proposal, we process your name, your email, the link or story you refer to and the content of your message.
We do not process sensitive personal data or financial data.
What we use it for
- To create and maintain your account, and to sync your saved stories, watchlist, views and dashboard across your devices.
- To send you the emails you request, such as the link to create a new password or the confirmation of a complaint.
- To handle your complaints and requests.
- To keep the service secure: limiting sign-in attempts, preventing abuse and detecting failures.
All of these purposes are necessary to provide the service. We do not use your data for advertising, we do not build commercial profiles, and we do not sell or rent your data.
Who we share it with
We do not share your personal data with third parties, except with the hosting provider that runs our servers, and when a competent authority requires it under the law.
Some features rely on external services that receive your IP address when they load: fonts (Google Fonts), some code libraries (unpkg and jsDelivr), YouTube videos and live TV streams, which are served from each channel’s own servers. AI translation and summaries send only news text to their provider, never our users’ data.
How long we keep it
Your account data, for as long as your account is active. If you delete it, it is erased immediately along with your saved stories, watchlist and views. Sessions expire after 90 days. Complaints are kept for as long as needed to handle them and to meet legal obligations. Technical API logs are deleted after 90 days.
Your rights
You can access, rectify or cancel your data, or object to its processing (ARCO rights), and you can also withdraw your consent or limit the use of your data. From Your account you can change your name and password, and delete your account with all its data at any time.
For any other request, use the Complaints form and choose “Personal data (ARCO rights)”, or write to [email protected]. Include your name, your account email and what you need. We will reply within 20 business days and, where appropriate, carry out your request within the following 15 business days. If you believe we did not handle your request properly, you may contact the competent data protection authority.
Cookies
We only use technical cookies that are necessary for the site to work. See the details in Cookies and local storage.
Minors
CheckNews can be used without an account at any age. Accounts are for people over 18, or for minors with the consent of a parent or guardian.
Changes to this notice
If we change this notice, we will publish the new version on this page with its update date. If the change significantly affects how we process your data, we will announce it on the site.
